PROPOSAL
(Poem by Wendy Howe)
see also the french version

Come, give me your hands
that were washed in a bowl
carved of stone and filled
with sea water.

Let your touch strengthen my days,
bless the thoughts of my children.
Slant your shadow over us,
as if it were a tent abiding
the desert wind and sand.

Let me wipe your face
with my rain-showered hair
and soften your life
with love reaped from the soul
like wheat and olives pressed
into fine oil.

Time flutters on my shoulder
and you see a woman unveiled,
stripped of custom as she kneels
before your feet asking
that we be joined like swans
who mate in the river marsh,

who share the half- light
of dusk and dawn shaping
our world in compromise.
