REINCARNATION
(Poem by Wendy Howe)

Early spring, and pastel moths
shadow my womb. Twin souls
pulsate the songs of sculptress
and playwright who emerged
from the wings of Moulin Rouge;
and opened evenings ago

when we made love possessed
by another man and woman.
They inspired us to light
vanilla candles, dangle champagne grapes
along our tongue, and place books
between bronze sculptures
         of Tristan and Isolde.

Now I carry their children and feel
sweet acts of drama
they performed in this garden
hushed by fir trees,
soothed by a fountain;
her aria trickling night
into a white throat
         of lilies and stone.
