(Poem by Wendy Howe )
see also the french version

Poised on a branch
dipping its long oar into stream water,
she feels the wind stroke her back.

Like the breath of an unborn child,
it sweeps over bare skin
pushing her spirit
toward the wellspring of life.

Shadows slip off the trees
and fall leaf-rippled in the tide
like dress sleeves off her arms
that long to hold an infant.

She looks at her reflection
and listens for the song
of a son or daughter
she hopes to conceive.

Stars hum in the throat
of twilight ;and her face pulsates
with their shine,

beautiful, enlightened
by the cradle rhythm
           of Spring.
