SUSPICION

(Poem by Wendy Howe )

Slung in the long silence
of legs and sheer darkness
draping the corner,

I sit poised -
a slim mark
of exclamation
ending the day.

No!
my lips and bones
echo through the room
imploring the wind
not to leave.

It swept in
with the first breath
of moonlight shadowing
the venetian blind;

and I knew its scent
was your poetry
cologne-splashed
on evening's face.

If only, I could inhale
the distilled air of love
without shivering,
then I would feel sated --

my hands at rest
on a pearl-white knee.
